Every marketing magazine and meeting is buzzing with “Bots”. They’re the future; They’re  taking over the world; They’re the marketing manager’s next best friend.

But how many of us marketing pros can confidently explain how we’ll be using bots as part of our marketing strategy? What they actually do? Or even list off a few of our best friends?

WHAT ARE BOTS?
A chatbot is essentially a computer program made with artificial intelligence to talk to humans over the internet. Chatbots have vastly improved since Clippy – Microsoft’s talking paperclip.

You can now order a pizza, search for flights, turn black and white pictures to colour, or just kill some boredom all with the help of a bot.

Facebook Messenger is possibly the most widely known bot platform but others such as LINE, Kik, and Google’s new messaging app Allo are all gaining popularity

WHY DO I NEED TO START THINKING ABOUT BOTS?
For brands they provide a great way to curve costs on customer relations and from a user’s point of view they’re an un-intimidating and easy way to engage with a brand.

Here at SMACK we’re talking to brands about bots to improve sales, customer service or even just have some fun with.

WHERE DO I START?
The best place to start is to have a play. Luckily for you we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite Facebook Messenger ‘hot bots’. Find instructions on how to add them to Facebook Messenger here

"THEY'RE THE FUTURE; THEY'RE TAKING OVER THE WORLD; THEY'RE THE MARKETING MANAGER'S NEXT BEST FRIEND"

KLM
If you find yourself flying KLM you must check out their bot. Without leaving the Facebook Messenger app, you can check in, get your boarding pass, and receive flight status updates. An exciting update to the KLM chatbot is the emoji feature that allows users to send it one emoji in return for some useful travel information. Strapped for cash? A coin emoji will direct you to the nearest ATM. A burger emoji directs you to the local fast food joint. Take off

Hello Jarvis
We all just switch off our alarms as they go off but Hello Jarvis has revolutionised our daily routine.  Hello Jarvis humanises your daily tasks. Ask it to remind you to pay the rent in a week and unlike you it won’t forget.  Unlike a calendar it makes the whole experience more personal. Use it to remember to buy milk, renew your passport, or even make a start on your bot strategy. Say hi

LazySet
Making a Spotify playlist is fun but time consuming but not with LazySet. Just tell it which artists you want your playlist to sound like and this clever chatbot will compile a cool mix of songs accordingly. It’s super quick and easy and connects directly to your Spotify account. Creating utility for their customers or providing entertainment are vital ingredients for every successful bot. Get DJing

Take Ten
Finally to stop bots literally taking over your life. Download Take Ten - the anti-social chatbot. It’s difficult to log out of Facebook when it’s part of job but for those of you want to keep time on social media restricted, Take Ten - the straight-talking chatbot - will do it for you. From the moment you say hello it will cut to the chase and ask how long you want to use Facebook for. When your time’s up, it’ll hurl a tirade of abuse at you until you close Messenger. Simple! Brace yourself
